Whitney, an engaging young lady from Rhode Island, was on a trip through Grand Canyon with her mom as a high school graduation present. As the youngest member of our expedition, she became known affectionately as "the Kid." Next stop for her would be George Washington University in D.C., followed by I'm sure a bright future. I was so attracted to her because she reminded me of me the first time I saw the canyon, full of wonder and delight with every twist and turn of river and trail.

This photo was taken at Deer Creek Falls, a green haven of clear pools and dripping moss and ferns. It is on the other side of a rather hair-raising ledge traverse. It did not faze "the kid" one bit.
