Hunted to the brink of extinction to make purses and shoes from its hide, the alligator is a conservation success story. Healthy numbers once again stalk the sloughs and swamps of the southeast United States, this one in Big Cypress Preserve in Florida. Its crocodilian cousins are not faring so well in Africa, South America, and Asia, though only in Asia is the species endangered, for now.
